Waste Sector

The UK generates more than 430 million tonnes of waste and recycling every year and employs around 160,000 workers in the waste industry to provide collection and process services. With government targets, this sector is only continuing to grow with the Gross Value Added (GVA) of the waste and resource management sector growing at a faster rate than the wider economy over the past decade. In 2016 alone, the GVA increased by 8% from the previous year.

Whilst highly productive, the waste industry is also very hazardous to work in. Statistics from Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that while the waste sector only accounts for around 0.4% of jobs in the UK, workers in this industry remain in the top four highest risk professions.

Municipal and Commercial Collection

This covers the collection of residual waste, green waste  and recyclables.  According to HSE, around 70% of all waste industry workers are in this sector, and account for about 80% of all reported injuries.

The overall industry performance is poor; RIDDOR reportable injuries in the waste and recycling sector are over four times greater than other industry sectors.
